Fighting in Afghanistan intensifies

Insurgents continued to intensify operations in Afghanistan with 34 people killed in fighting Saturday.

The dead included two French soldiers and one American soldier. Four Afghan troops were killed and 13 are missing, and 15 rebels died.

The recent upsurge in fighting is concentrated in southern Afghanistan among Taliban supporters.

The Afghan army has reinforced its presence in the area with the help of allied troops.

Rebels have adopted techniques used effectively in Iraq like roadside and suicide bombings. They also appear more willing than ever to engage in protracted firefights sometimes involving hundreds of insurgents.
