Japan plans major fight against global warming

Japan Monday unveiled a revolutionary idea to fight greenhouses gases that would pump carbon dioxide into subterranean storage reservoirs.

The plan would store up to 200 million tons of carbon dioxide a year by 2020 effectively reducing the country's emmisions by one-sixth, Minister of Economy official Masahiro Nishio said.

Actual pumping of carbon dioxide pressurized into a liquid form could begin as early as 2010 according to Nishio.

Japan has been a prime mover behind the Kyoto Protocol -- an international movement to cut greenhouse gases by 2012.
