U.S. wants to develop new nukes

Even as it attempts to cut Iran's nuclear energy program on the grounds that Iran is really looking to build nuclear weapons, the United States is developing new nuclear warheads of its own.

Opponents say that the new research could spark an arms races with Russia and China. It also undermines any moral authority in demanding that Iran and North Korea halt their own nuclear programs, which those countries say are designed for power generation not bombs.

Many proponents of disarmament believe that preventing nations from replacing older nuclear weapons is key to eventually ending the threat of a global nuclear holocaust.
