Dalai Lama: Indepedence not for Tibet
Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama said Wednesday that Tibetan independence was not in the best interest of the region but renewed calls for full autonomy for his homeland.
"We are not seeking separation. Tibet is a landlocked country, materially very, very backward. We want modernization, for that reason if we remain with China we get more benefits than alone," the Dalai Lama said speaking to the European Parliament's fore affairs committee in Brussels.

The Dalai Lama said that autonomy was needed to preserve Tibet's unique culture and Buddhist tradition.
"Last year we renewed direct contact with the representatives of China; five round-table discussions took place. However, the government has not acknowledged that. Inside Tibet there is no sign of improvement," he said.
