Aftershock, volcanic activity hits Indonesian quake area

Mount Merapi volcano trembled Saturday shooting out lava and ash clouds as a powerful aftershock rocked Central Java.

"Mbah" Maridjan, the volcano's spiritual custodian according to royal tradition, circled the mountain in an appeasement ritual to ward off an eruption. Over the last week, the dome of Merapi has grown by 330 feet.

The strong 6.3 earthquake that shook Central Java may have weakened the dome contributing to the possibility of an eruption.

An estimated 135,000 homes were destroyed in the quake, many of them in the historic Bantul district, home to the ancient royal cemetery of Imogiri.
