Sudan open on new Darfur peace deal
Sudan indicated it may accept new concessions in negotiations for a solution to the Darfur crisis.
The new deal would have Sudan disarm Janjaweed militia at a faster pace.
The Arabic-speaking Janjaweed often raid non-Arabic communities, taking children as slaves according to some. The ethnic clashes have contributed to the displacement of about 2 million people and the deaths of 180,000.
Sudan has consistently claimed that it does not support the Janjaweed as alledged by some observer groups.
Darfur is also a base for Chadian rebels, and Chad has accused Sudan of supporting these groups.
Sudan has countered that Chad supports anti-Sudan rebels in the Darfur area.
Al-Qaeda's recent interest in the region complicates the problem. The Justice and Equality Movement has been linked with Muslim fundamentalism. In recent messages, al-Qaeda has called for its supporters to fight Western influence in Darfur.
