Gang offensive toll rises to 96 in Brazil

At least 96 people died in the largest gang war in Sao Paulo's history according to the latest government reports.

The organized attacks against police and security forces Monday is believed linked with the movement of at least eight incarcerated crime bosses including Marcos Willians Herba Camacho, head of the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC).

Media in Brazil report that the current calm came after the state government reached a deal with the PCC, but governor Claudio Lembo denied any negotiations with the gangs.

Lembo turned down a request for federal troop assistance and the Sao Paulo police chief said that a 'counter-offensive' was slated for Tuesday.
