Huge California fires could spell disaster
Two fast-burning fires were close to merging today in the southern California desert threatening a possibly historic disaster.
The fires threaten an area parched dry and loaded with trees killed by bark beetle infestations.
With temperatures in the 100s, quite normal for this time of year, and low humidity there is little to stop the fire's progress.
And with still a good six to eight weeks left of the hottest part of the year, the outlook does not look good. Currently the fire is threatening the Big Bear Lake resort in San Bernadino county where a state of emergency has been declared.
