Congo ready for historic vote

Voters in the Democratic Republic of Congo will try to end years of warfare in the first democratic elections in the country for more than 40 years.

Congo has the largest United Nations peacekeeping force in the world numbering 17,000 along with another 1,000 European soldiers.

Some 50,000 polling places will handle more than 25 million voters in a country as geographically large as Western Europe.

"The (African Union) congratulates the Congolese people for their patience, courage and faith in the future, which they have shown during long periods of war and the three years of transition," said an AU statement released Saturday.
