Da Vinci Code has best opening of year

The critics panned the movie but The Da Vinci Code had the best debut box office of the year and the second highest of all time, Sony Pictures said Sunday.

Only Star Wars: Episode III has topped the film's $224 million opening last weekend.

Movie analysts said the big opening sales were welcome after recent films failed to live up to expectations. It was also good news for Sony which has been struggling lately.

Popularity of the Da Vinci Code book may be outweighting the reviews in driving people to the theaters. Church protests might also have provided unintended publicity for the film.

The all-time highest grossing movie is Titanic, which made $1.8 billion worldwide.

It will be interesting to see how The Da Vinci Code does in comparison to The Passion of Christ, a film that was lauded rather than condemned by church officials and grossed $612 million.
