UN wants US to close down Guantanamo prison

The United Nations Friday said the United States should close its prsion at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Committee against Torture, the U.N. group that monitors compliance with the world anti-torture treaty also said that detainees should not be deported to any country where they face risks of being tortured.

U.S. President George W. Bush has indicated his desire to close the Guantanamo prison but is waiting for a Supreme Court ruling on military tribunals for detainees.

Groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have accused the U.S. of using torture methods at Guantanamo and at detention facilities in Iraq.

"We hope that the United States takes to heart these criticisms and recommendations and begins a significant shift in its policies, including at a minimum immediate access to the prisoners that are in secret detention facilities," Jennifer Daskal of Human Rights Watch told The Associated Press.
